KINGFISHERKingfishers are a species of small to medium sized brightly coloured birds. Most species are found in Australasia. There are over 90 different kinds of Kingfisher, some endangered and some are common. The three different families of kingfisher are the Alcedinidae (river kingfishers), Halcyonidae (tree kingfishers), and Cerylidae (water kingfishers). All have large heads, long, sharp, pointed beaks, short legs and small tails. Most species are tropical in distribution, and the majority are found only in forests. They consume a wide range of prey as well as fish, usually caught by swooping down from a perch.
